How to Have Healthy Hair - No Split Ends??

Updated: Feb 16, 2020

So many people struggle with split ends and dry, damaged hair. We've all heard the classic rules of no heat and no dye but never commit enough to give up those luxuries. If you've read any of my other beauty, self care related posts, you know that I tend to believe in a very natural routine; my hair care is no different. Now hear me out, I'm not saying to ditch your flat iron all together, but maybe it'd be good to embrace your curls because I can guarantee, every girl out there with straight hair wishes they had your volume and texture to hold a curl.

Personally, I get my hair cut maybe once a year. Probably less if I'm growing my hair out. I really only do it because I feel like I should, not because I look at my ends and see that they need it. For most people, that's not nearly often enough. They say to cut your hair, what, every 8 weeks! We all know we don't want to cut the length off our hair that often so if you follow my hair routine, I can pretty much guarantee you'll have healthier, stronger hair. First, I don't dye my hair. Of course, I have moments where I really want to be blonde again (as I highlighted my hair for 4 years), but as much as I don't like to admit it, I think everyone looks their most beautiful natural, and that includes hair color. I also wash my hair every other time I take a shower. Now if you have dry hair, you can get away with even less, but my hair looks ratchet pretty quickly. I also condition it every time or use leave in conditioner once I get out of the shower. This ads moisture, shine, and prevents static or frizz (and I'm sure as we all know, knots). The most important thing that keeps my hair healthy is that I don't blow dry it, straighten it, or curl it. I do so only every couple of months for holidays or big occasions. Think about how much time you spend a week styling your hair. If you let it air dry in braids or a twisted bun, it would calm curly hair and give a little beach wave to straight hair. With this hair routine, hair stylists tell me I have very healthy, strong hair even after 2 years of it not being trimmed. They are shocked every time when I tell them I don't even use fancy products or shampoos. I use Suave! I know we don't want to hear this, but as with so many things, diet and sleep will also help keep your hair (and believe it or not, your nails too) strong, healthy, and growing!

Of course I recognize that not everyone has straight, flat, shiny hair naturally, but I do believe that you can avoid heat and hair dye and still love your hair. So try washing your hair less often. Try air drying your hair and twisting it as it dries if its curly, try curling your hair with curlers or braids, and if on special occasions, you need to use heat, use protectants first. As far as hair dye goes, if you feel the need to switch up your look, go to a professional salon so it can have as little damage as possible. And try not to dye it constantly, let it repair itself in between dyes! And while it has dye in it, keep the heat off your hair. Try not to do both! I know it takes a lot of change and sacrifice to remove so many things from your look and style of your hair, but I bet when you figure it out, you'll get so many compliments on your beautiful long straight hair or your voluminous curls that give excitement to any hair style!

I hope I made your day and your hair a little healthier,

Gabriella
